(this thread is reviewed on a monthly basis)

Q: How can I suggest a new language?
A: Add an answer below, if you have checked it hasn't been requested yet.

Q: My language was added to the translation tool, great thanks! How can others and myself enjoy translating it the most?
A: The answer is here.

Q: My language hasn't been added yet :(
A: Ensure it has a coordinator assigned, and if not, nominate yourself. Then we'll add your language to the tool.

Q: What is a coordinator?
A: The answer is here.

Q: How can I test the translation on my device?
A: Ping @martonmiklos and ask to build an rpm for your language. If desired, the localisation packages will be published on OpenRepos. You could also manage the RPM build by yourself. Here you can find the scripts used for building the current packages.

Cheers!

Is there any way to request another l10n related improvements? Like these two issues: https://together.jolla.com/question/128661/localization-aware-date-display/https://together.jolla.com/question/128428/people-app-start-first-character-sorting/

XiveZ ( 2016-10-06 20:21:32 +0300 )edit

@XiveZ, your coordinator rights have been granted, you can now accept all your suggestions :)

sledges ( 2017-07-11 15:51:51 +0300 )edit

@sledges Please, make me a contributor too. I started the translation when it was not yet on sailfish.org. Now I have spare time for translations.

velemas ( 2017-11-28 17:26:24 +0300 )edit

@XiveZ would you like the help of @velemas as contributor? Sorry for late reply, our email notification system failed and this has fallen through the cracks.. At least I made a-date-sorted RSS feed reader for this, so hope not to miss no more :)

Sanskrit

Jolla already supports the Nagari keyboard. It'd be awesome if Sanskrit localization too were present.

Please add the language Frisian (fy-NL) so I can start localizing it. If possible you may copy over the Dutch strings and mark them as suggested, so I can work from there. Thanks.

Hello @d4nnguyen, thanks for suggesting the Vietnamese language! Are you ready to be a coordinator of it? A language cannot be added without a volunteer coordinator (see their responsibilities here: https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Translate_the_OS#Coordinators)

As a native Arabic speaker, I would be happy to contribute to Arabic translations =)

Thank you! :) I believe we would first need to get clear on the right-to-left reading support in SFOS?

English (EU) i.e. locale en_DK

As I believe the addition of the locale en_DK ("European" / EU English) as a community translation would be a really nice enhancement for SailfishOS, I volunteer as a translation project coordinator for it.

Dear Jolla L10n team, it would be really nice to start with a copy of the current state of the English (UK) translation (if Pootle allows for that), as that would spare me the tedious effort of manually accepting more than 98% of the strings (as the differences to the locale en_UK are minuscule), and the existing language style guide for English (UK) does not need to be adapted at all (on first sight).

Background:
The locale en_DK suits "continental" Europeans (within the EU) perfectly, who prefer an UI in English, but certainly want as default currency symbol, "ISO-style" numerical date format yyyy-mm-dd, informal date format dd/mm etc., which the locale en_UK does not provide.

References, e.g.:

Cheers & happy sailing

Dutch (Belgium)

The nl_BE translation could use the nl translation as a base. Although it could be almost completely rewritten, using the local vocabulary (and grammar) for several very common words would already be sufficient. The two Dutch languages will rediverge in the future anyway, so let's stay ahead of the curve.

(I also volunteer as coordinator, of course.)

@nthn, here you are: https://translate.sailfishos.org/nl_BE/ Copying all existing strings from the Dutch will happen at a later time.

sledges ( 2018-09-13 16:13:32 +0300 )edit

@sledges, many thanks! You don't have to worry about copying the existing strings, I think it should also work if I just download the translation files from nl_NL one by one, make changes where needed offline, then upload those translations to nl_BE.

nthn ( 2018-09-17 15:10:41 +0300 )edit

@sledges, alright, all of the important changes are now done, and I've managed to spot a couple more mistakes and inconsistencies in nl_NL to fix, too. The same problem seems to be happening as that from a while ago, in that it shows that the translation is 99% finished, but there are no more strings to translate. I've quickly compared the amount of words for each file between nl_NL and nl_BE, and they're all the same, so I don't know what's going on. Could you take a quick look? Thanks!

Romanian

I would like to be added as a coordinator for the Romanian locale. Yesterday I submitted ~2.000 translation suggestions, today I have built the translations package and I am verifying the strings, one by one, in the actual applications.

After verification, I would like to be able to approve these translations myself.

Thank you !

Hello @fnkka, I second you to that. I am the sole RO coordinator so far, but I have very limited time until later this year, so it would be great to move forward somehow.

Ping @sledges, he can do this.

emva ( 2019-03-05 00:43:43 +0300 )edit

@sledges a bit of help here please; otherwise I cannot contribute.. it's been one month.

fnkkio ( 2019-03-16 08:39:04 +0300 )edit

Thanks @fnkka, you are now the coordinator. Sorry for the delay, but please do not create new answers, because there was already one for Romanian, as it's easy to lose oneself:)
